I loved their other stuff and not so much this album. Compared to their previous works, not nearly as good.
Overcoming Me is a mediocre rock song with an interesting use of synths in the beginning, bridge, and the breakdown. You is a mediocre ballad. This album is not without its hits. Then it leads into what seems to be either an interlude after only 2 minutes, or an intro to the title track, which is a great song. Dying to Become is almost epic, and I applaud Kutless for at least attempting it. The Rescue is the last really good song on the album. Guiding Me Home is a mostly acoustic song which doesn't seem to get good until the end when there is only one minute left in the song.
Loud has very cheesy lyrics: "You can try to turn me down, but I was born to be this loud" It's got some good riffs, but it doesn't make up for the rest of the song. There is nothing wrong with that, it is a decent power ballad.
Then the album moves into the radio hit Complete which is a great power ballad. I Do Not Belong is like Sea of Faces II.
It kicks off with The Feeling which is just a song about rocking out. It almost works but the song just lacks something.
Kutless has all the elements to produce a great album they have the ability to write decent songs, both ballads and rock, but they have yet to put out an album that is original. The Disease and the Cure is also another great rock song.
Promise You falls way short of a good power ballad, maybe it would be a good song if he didn't always sing in D.
3 the title track. oh. Kutless sounds like a Seattle band. the songs are somewhat short. by the way, Kutless is from Portland, Oregon, not Seattle. imagine if Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains did Christian music in the 1990's and you have an idea of what Kutless is about. song no.1, "The Feeling" amps up the energy and the instrumental song no.2 prepares your ears for a positive beatdown from song no.
I hope Kutless doesn't repeat that on future CDs. As a Kutless fan, I like the sound of most of the songs, but found them too short. In under 15 minutes, I think I was through 5 songs already.
My ultimate review is that those 3 songs were quickly added to my Kutless playlist, along with I Do Not Belong and You, which are both solid power ballads, but unlike the last 2 albums, there weren't more songs that really stood out to me. The opening track The Feeling is a nice rock anthem with biblical lyrics, as are the other stand-out tracks Complete and the title track, which is the closest to my favorite Kutless song Not What You See. If you liked their previous work, you should like this album which for me is 75% out of 100%, 3 1/2 stars. Kutless is a band I've enjoyed since their self-titled debut album in 2002, in particular the songs Run and Your Touch which are biblical and having seen the band live, are full of emotional energy. Arguably, I felt they've improved with each of their following albums Sea Of Faces, Strong Tower and Hearts of The Innocent, which I rated a top 10 album of 2006.To Know That You're Alive is yet another solid rock worship album but not quite another improvement over previous work in my opinion.
